"Land of Liberty"
“Land Of Liberty” is a seventy – ninety minute documentary on homelessness in the United States. It will cover locations in
Martinsburg, WV, Baltimore Md., Washington, D.C. ,and New York City. This compassionate film will follow three main
characters through various stages of homelessness. It is our goal to show the real world of homelessness and bring
awareness to this serious social issue.

The homeless man, woman, or child on the street does not have a voice… yet. The power of media can and will give them a
voice. There are stories to be heard and interactions to be viewed. The experiences of the homeless encompass a culture
that is foreign to the average, middle-class American. This film will allow the audience to peer into the world of the homeless
and experience what is an everyday reality to approximately 744, 000 individuals, a night, in the United States. In order to
bring awareness and promote change to this ever growing social problem, “Land of Liberty” must be made.
It is our duty to bring about change that will help our fellow man. President Kennedy once said that, “If a free society cannot
help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.” The United States is currently “home” to around 3.5
million individuals who will be homeless at some point during this year. As the wealthiest nation in the world, that number is
astounding and sad.

It is our goal to show what is working and what is not. It is not our goal to flame any one organization, but rather bring to
light the true homeless experience, be it good or bad, including those interactions with the various organizations that they
might come into contact. A compassionate and genuine view of the homeless experience will provide the audience with a level
of insight on this social issue that couldn’t be realized through other mediums. “Land of Liberty” will exemplify just how
powerful motion pictures can be by captivating the viewer and ultimately bringing a call to action.

If we as a society can degrade an entire class of people, what is to keep us from segregating another? If we are to view the
homeless class as not worthy of our attention or even disregard their rights then what is to keep us from spreading our
oppression even further. Each week we are currently spending one billion dollars on the war in Iraq. If we were to take one
percent of that we could feed every homeless person in America for the week. We as a nation must reexamine our priorities.
When so little could mean so much, to so many, how can we turn a blind eye to such a serious social issue? We can no
longer accept the status quo. We can no longer stand idly by. We must take action for those who are currently homeless
and those who are but a paycheck away. With their voice and story come inspiration, with our film comes change.
